WHERE WE ARE TODAY
Unprecedented. Isolating. Uncertain.
These words have described the many harsh realities all communities and individual households have experienced in 2020. We know people continue to live through tough circumstances today.

However, since March, we have continued to keep our focus on a few other words:

Connection. Laughter. Empathy. Healing.

As shelter in place began in California, we have continued our mission, maintaining a connection with patients and those who depend on us. We understand: The show must go on.

At the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living, we collaborated on creating the virtual experience of healthcare clowning.

It involved connecting on ZOOM and engaging with each resident face to face through that pane of glass.
Our work didn't end there.

At California Pacific Medical Center, we used iPads to FaceTime with the patients on the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit.

“We heard a loud voice from the hallway. We checked on the patient and discovered him singing and laughing while holding the iPad.” -CPMC Staff

With another partner, we ran into technology limitations, but that didn’t stop the need to provide meaningful ways to connect with the populations we serve.

For On Lok Lifeways, we created 20 minute pre-recorded videos that ENGAGE, INVITE, and ENTERTAIN the viewers.
Of course, we’d love to get back to each of these locations in person, as we understand the VALUE of in-person connection.

And we aren’t the only ones who believe this.

The Life Enrichment Director at AlmaVia San Francisco vouched for the importance of healthcare clowning engagement when she declared, “Healthcare Clowns Are Essential Workers.”

That first in-person shift since March felt refreshingly familiar, with the added layer of hygiene protocols and added stress of built up isolation.

We knew this visit was needed.

Even the staff who passed by knew something magical was happening.

There was a true human-to-human connection manifesting before our very eyes.

Laughter, clapping, dancing, and smiles filled the landscape of that outdoor fountain area designated for this healthcare clowning performance.
Virtual Visits Today And Beyond
Today, we are officially providing virtual connections for four locations and performing in-person at one location.

Soon we hope to return to our regular schedule from before March, with added safety protocols in place.

We anticipate the need for our services will continue to grow through the end of the year!

When we first started, as many ventures begin, there were so many unknowns...

I remember packing every magic trick and circus prop I could fit on my person, including my nerves.

Anyone's first anything can be nerve-wracking, but a clown is at their best when they live in naivete.

And what kept us going was the deep understanding of our VISION of what this practice could be...

We knew the impact it would make in healthcare and the lives we touched...

With our lead clown, Ben Johnson, we reached out to approximately 1044 patient interactions in that first year.

That seemed like a lot at the time!

We were really excited to complete our pilot program with California Pacific Medical Center.

We served their pediatric department, alzheimer's department, and their skilled nursing facility over the course of those few months.

Yet, we wondered what would happen after that pilot program...
Would We Be Able To Continue? - Would The Hospital Need Us? - Would We Have Funding?
Even though there was a lot of buzz at the hospital, we knew there was still a lot of work to do.

We didn't want to just be a flash in the pan and disappear from the hospital.

Jeff Raz and Sherry Sherman, founders of the Medical Clown Project, worked tirelessly to build a network of donors, foundations, and grants to establish this very important work.

It was all going smoothly, and then...
We Made The Difficult Decision To Go On Hiatus
Despite the success of transforming stressful spaces in the hospital, the reality of sustainability began to rear its ugly head.

Funding diminished and we had to take a break.

A few months went by, which felt like ages as we could only think about the people we were used to seeing every single week.

Then, out of the blue...

The foundation at the hospital reached out to offer to support our cause! And more importantly, we were able to serve our patients again.

It was such a RELIEF...

And that was the moment we KNEW we had to do something more...
2015
The First Grand Circus Rounds
With all non-profits and great causes, in order to create sustainability, fundraising becomes an ongoing effort.

In 2015, the Medical Clown Project launched its first Grand Circus Rounds fundraiser.

What's with the name?

For all you hospital folks out there, you might recognize the term Grand Rounds, which is the hospital term for a formal meeting to discuss clinical cases and problems in medicine.

If we were to describe what we do at a Grand Rounds, the best way to do it is simply bring the Circus.

Now you can see and understand the twist in the name.

But we wanted to make this MORE than just a fundraiser...
The VIP Show
Laguna Honda Hospital's Gerald Simon Theater is reserved all weekend long for our fundraiser.

So with this realization, we knew we could do something VERY SPECIAL for the hospital residents.

As we prepared for our show, we asked ourselves, "How can we bring the patients into our gala?"

That was when we decided to create an earlier matinee show EXCLUSIVELY for the residents of Laguna Honda Hospital before the fundraiser.

So we invited all the units to bring their residents.

A parade of staff wheeled over as many residents as they could.

The overwhelmingly positive response turned this show into a tradition.

Residents of Laguna Honda now look forward to the official: HOSPITAL CIRCUS DAY!
2020
Our Impact Today Has Grown 10x
It's incredible to witness the massive growth over the course of 10 years ever since those first few shifts.

Our organization has grown and has established itself in 6 healthcare facilities with shifts happening 3-4 DAYS A WEEK.

With this explosion of hospital visits, we make approximately 11,784 PATIENT INTERACTIONS a year.

We're now in the process of EXPANDING these shifts further for 2020 as the global therapeutic healthcare clowning movement catches on.

We're thrilled to have long term commitments with each and every one of our partners.

And there's so much MORE on the horizon...

The thrills of Jefferson's flying juggling clubs brought so much joy to our guests last year that we had to have him back for another Grand Circus Rounds! Catch him perform his signature act: Unicycling on a 6 foot unicycle while playing the violin.

Serchmaa Byamba's Contortionists

We are very excited to have the Mongolian Contortion Center led by San Francisco's Serchmaa Byamba to grace our stage and delight our guests with a breathtaking performance of flexibility and impossible precision!

Jacob Doyle Haslem

With a fusion of elegance and disruption, Jacob's Cyr Wheel mesmerizes and jolts your senses as he spins his way into your imagination. Currently, you can catch his spinning wheel under the big top in Oakland in The Soiled Dove.

Tyler Parks & Andrew P. Quick

Two Clowns. Two Jugglers. Need I say more? Tyler and Andrew are two of our newest members of Medical Clown Project, but are long time clowns. Their partnership on stage brings everlasting amusement that will keep you laughing on your car ride home.

La Famiglia Gentile

We are so lucky to have the Gentile Family perform for Grand Circus Rounds. They have performed for Circus Monti, Krystalpallast Variety, Circus Bella, Flynn Creek Circus, and Zoppe Italian Family Circus, and now they are so gracious to make a stop at our fundraiser.
